You'd be hard pressed to find a better-looking baseball game than ITriple Play 2002/I. If only the same could be said for its gameplay. If easy-playing, action-packed ball games spiced with a liberal dosage of the long ball are what you're seeking, this game won't disappoint. p Graphically, no one can touch the stunning visuals and attention to detail that EA Sports has given to every ballplayer and stadium. Most players' faces accurately resemble their real-life counterparts (albeit with oversized heads), and they come complete with customized batting stances and perfectly rendered uniform detail. The ballparks themselves come alive in breathtaking beauty as a variety of camera angles put you right on the field and in the seats.p But too many inconsistencies and omissions hold this game back from greatness. Most unrealistic is the frequency of home runs and the ease with which you're able to score runs--the novelty wears off pretty fast after swatting long ball after long ball and finding yourself tied 9-9 in the 4th inning. Playing at the rookie, pro, or all-star level does little to stem the outpouring of runs, and does even less to shorten the tedious game pace, perhaps the most unintentionally realistic part of ITriple Play 2002/I. Fielding could use some fine-tuning as well. And when does EA Sports plan to reintroduce injuries to this series? p Game modes still feature fully customizable season options and the home run derby, either one-on-one or tournament (up to eight players). But gone from the derby, strangely, is the option to choose from past legendary players and members of the 500-home-run club. p Calling the action this year is the two-man announcing team of Bob Costas and Harold Reynolds. Costas thankfully keeps things more low-key than his real-life persona, while Reynolds dishes the sass like a pro ("This isn't an eye test--swing the bat!"). INBA Live 2001/I should've been the greatest basketball game on earth, but missing gameplay elements and a few other glitches keep it from superstar status. But despite it all, PS2 owners and longtime INBA Live/I fans will be hard pressed to find a better hoops game for their console in the foreseeable future.p The first thing players will notice is how the graphics represent such a tremendous leap beyond previous installments of the series. In general, players are nicely animated, and there is a good amount of detail to the arenas. However, the individual-player graphics are uneven. While most of the bodies are well rendered, many of the faces are way off the mark. Virtual Shaquille O'Neal's face looks nothing like the real Shaq's face, and most of the NBA's lesser names are completely unrecognizable. Some marquee players, like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, look fairly authentic.p While the PS2 usually plays an intelligent game of basketball, the controls in INBA Live 2001/I have a slightly sluggish feel to them and take some getting used to. Also, EA stripped away both the franchise mode and the NBA challenges (three-point contests, etc.), which had been in previous incarnations of the NBA Live series. One month out of each year is devoted to the insanity of the NCAA playoffs. The annual ritual of March Madness includes dozens of teams, the hottest young players, salivating scouts, chair-hurling coaches, small schools, big schools, cheerleaders, the hopes and dreams of thousands of alumni, and, of course, complete TV coverage. p With IMarch Madness 2002/I, EA Sports brings its college basketball franchise to the PlayStation2 for another year. But despite fidelity to the college game, the result is more of a thud than a bounce. The problem isn't really the game itself. The Play Now exhibition and full-scale tournament modes are fine, and the game includes 150 teams all detailed down to players, uniforms, fight songs, cheerleaders, players, stats, and play styles. You even have the option of creating your own team with everything from uniforms to players. The problem is what's missing compared to the competition and to previous incarnations of IMarch Madness/I on the PlayStation. About 150 teams, the dynasty mode, and even the season mode are MIA! Why are these key features missing? Disappointing, to say the least. p At least the game plays a decent game of basketball and is true to NCAA rules and quirks. It shares some problems--the computer crowds the lane too much--and a graphics engine with INBA Live 2002/I, but at least the previous rebounding problems are fixed. And the game looks great, too, even though most of the players don't have their real faces like in the NBA version. The audio is also excellent; the game features roughly 60 distinctive fight songs, and the crowd roars and quiets down with the action.
