Although the game will seem very familiar to Sonic fans, ISonic Advance/I is an entirely new creation that's been built from the ground up. The gameplay, graphics, and sound borrow from the classic Sonic games on the Genesis and are successfully translated to the Game Boy Advance. The game's single-player modes are relatively short 2-D platform rounds--each run takes two to three hours--but replay value is added through the game's various characters. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy each have different abilities that make getting through the game a unique experience. p The real star here is the game's link capabilities. The Chao Garden allows you to raise your little critters and upload them to the GameCube via the link cable and ISonic Adventure 2: Battle/I. Having one cartridge lets up to four GBA players compete in one minigame. Gamers can play two additional minigames if each player owns a cartridge. Although the single-player game is quite good, the link options give the title tremendous value. p The only notable problem stems from the series itself: There are still entirely too many cheap deaths resulting from the title's high-speed gameplay. You'll find yourself zipping along a level only to be hit by an obstacle you had little chance of seeing, let alone avoiding. Ultimately, the only way to get past these hazards is to memorize where they are. This minor flaw doesn't detract from the game's excellent value, though. Based on the Nickelodeon movie of the same name, IJimmy Neutron: Boy Genius/I follows the adventures of a whiz kid and his robot dog, Goddard. The parents of Retroville have been kidnapped, and it's up to Jimmy to save them while defeating the vile Yokians and the evil King Goobot. Before Jimmy can do that, however, he must find all the parts of a spaceship so he can embark on his quest. At his disposal are a wide variety of gadgets, including lasers, goo guns, jetpacks, rockets, and grappling guns. The game features 24 levels that take place in locations such as Retroville, a meteor field, and the Yokian Empire. Perhaps the strongest part of the game is its multiplayer mode, which supports up to four players via link cable. In this mode, players compete to collect the most coins while slowing the opposition with goo darts. p The single-player game incorporates basic platform elements. Players spend most of the time running, jumping, and collecting objects. It's hardly innovative, but it works for a younger audience. The four racing levels also add some variety. Extremely young gamers may need an adult handy to deal with the game's heavy text and poor save system; the latter uses long passwords to track a player's progress. All in all, this is a good game for fans of the series. It features strong graphics and plenty of the film's flavor.
